Microgreens Parsley Pea Shoots
Sowing info
Soak Parsley Pea seeds in water for 8–12 hours (up to 24 hours is fine, but not longer) to soften the shells and speed up germination. Spread the seeds densely across the surface of peat free compost or coir and cover with a thin 1-2 cm layer. Can also be grown on soil free microgreen mats.
Growing info
Keep the tray in a warm spot until germination, which usually takes 3-5 days. Once the shoots appear, move them to bright, indirect light. Microgreens are ready to harvest in 14 – 21 days, when 10-15 cm tall; snip just above the first leaves to encourage a second or even third cut.

Herb Sally Lettuce Leaf Basil
Sowing info
Sow seed on the surface of damp peat free compost and just cover. Keep at 15-25C until after germination, which takes 14-21 days. Water very lightly as seedlings emerge. Grow on in cooler conditions. When all risk of frost has passed, harden basil plants off before planting out in a sheltered sunny position.
Growing info
Water moderately, taking care to avoid splashing the leaves. Harvest basil leaves regularly when required to promote fresh new growth and pinch out any flowers that appear to prolong the harvest period and maintain the flavour.

Edible Houseplant Arabica Coffee
Sowing info
Soak seeds for 24 hours before sowing in pots of peat free compost. Sow around 1 cm deep and keep the compost consistently moist. Place in a warm, bright spot (24 – 29 °C). Germination can take 2-4 months, so patience and gentle care are key, germination is erratic so sow more than you need.
Growing info
Keep plants indoors or in a heated greenhouse, with bright, indirect light. Fertilise lightly in spring and summer. With consistent care, expect fragrant blooms in 3 – 4 years, followed by the first coffee cherries to enjoy or admire.
Garden jobs to do this November
- Plant tulip bulbs now. They like going into cold soil, and it helps protect them from tulip fire. Pop them in pots or borders about three times as deep as the bulb is tall, and they’ll give you a big splash of colour come spring.
- Spread a thick blanket of compost or well-rotted manure over empty beds. Worms and winter weather will work it in for you, so your soil is rich and ready by spring.
- Give your tools some love before they hibernate. Scrub off the mud, sharpen your secateurs and wipe the blades with a drop of oil so they’re rust-free and raring to go next year.
